North Portal, Saskatchewan Canada is a community of 113 people located on the US/Canadian border. The border crossing at North Portal is a 24 hour port and considered a major entry point for traffic entering and leaving Canada.
Our residents enjoy living a quiet, relaxed lifestyle. Play a round of golf at our unique course, visit our neighbouring town of Portal, North Dakota or kick back with the kids at Maxwell. Life in North Portal is like being at the cabin year round.
The Village of North Portal is located on Treaty 2 territory, which is the traditional territory of the Nakota, Nehiyaw/Cree, Nahkawe/Saulteaux, and Dakota, as well as the traditional homeland of the Métis.
For public notices, updates, news and more, follow the Village of North Portal on Facebook. Our page is updated regularly with community events, emergency information and important reminders.
If you plan to build, modify or remove a building , you may require a building permit.
Part of our emergency plan is the use of a community siren. We have shared an emergency siren with the City of Portal for over 50 years.
Know your siren:
3 Short: FIRE - Portal International Fire Dept call for their volunteers
1 Long Continuous: EMERGENCY (tornado, severe weather, train derailment, etc) check SaskAlert, The Weather Network or a local radio station (CJ 1280) for information.
1 Short at 12:00 noon CT. (11:00 am for North Portal during DST): daily test of system
Both CBSA and US Border Protection have sirens they use sporadically to control traffic. They are quieter and have a faster sound cycle.
According to village bylaw, all pets must be leashed when in a public place. Please do not let your animals run free without supervision.
All dogs and cats must be registered at the village office. This helps us identify your pet if it is missing or on the loose.
Please clean-up your pet’s waste in public areas.
You may walk your pet on a leash on the golf course, but do not dispose of any pet waste in the course's garbage bins. This has caused a mess for our hard working volunteers.
Starting July 1st, 2023, the village will be switching to curbside garbage and recycling service. You can read more about it under our Garbage & Recycling page. Pick up is every FRIDAY.
A larger bin is located temporarily at the village office at 204 Park Ave during the spring and fall clean-up season. The large bin can accommodate larger household items with the exception of appliances, which must be taken to the Bienfait landfill.
Do not overfill the bins or GFL may refuse to empty them.
On July 1st, 2023, the Village will be switching to curbside recycling. Please visit our Garbage & Recycling page for more info. Pick up day is every other THURSDAY.
You may also donate bottles and cans to Estevan Minor Football by bagging and placing them in the smaller blue bin next to the village office. All money collected is used toward community recreation events and equipment.
